Oncology is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and related therapies like surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and other modalities. Cancer refers to a deadly disease in which a tumor is formed in any part of the body. This tumor is the result of an uncontrolled division of cells. Cancer can be potentially cured if it is diagnosed and treated in an early stage. Hence, early detection and management of cancer is of prime importance.

+ Are there different types of oncologists?

Yes, depending on the oncology specialization, an oncologist can be a medical oncologist, surgical oncologist or a radiation oncologist.

+ Are all tumors cancerous?

If the tumor is malignant, it is cancerous. Benign tumors, on the other hand, are non-cancerous. Immediately consulting an oncologist in case of any tumor is highly recommended.

+ What is the difference between a surgical oncologist and a medical oncologist?

A medical oncologist treats cancer through medication while a surgical oncologist removes the tumor through surgical intervention.

+ Does chemotherapy have side-effects?

Being a complex treatment, chemotherapy could bring with it certain side-effects. It is best to discuss with the oncologist.
